At The Fern Early Learning Centre, we believe every child deserves access to quality education and care. The Child Care Subsidy (CCS) is designed to make that easier for families by helping reduce the cost of childcare across Australia.
This guide explains how the CCS works, what’s changing in 2026, and how these updates could benefit your family.
The Childcare Subsidy (CCS) is a government program that helps families pay for early learning and child-care services. Instead of paying the full fee yourself, the Government pays a percentage of your child-care costs directly to your provider, and you pay the remaining “gap” amount. The percentage you receive depends on your combined family income, as well as your child’s age and the type of approved service you use.
As of 2025, families can receive:
This means most families are eligible for at least some level of support — and for many, it covers a significant portion of their child-care fees.
From 5 January 2026, a new government initiative called the 3-Day Guarantee now offers eligible families 36 hours of subsidised care per week (or 72 hours per fortnight), significantly expanding access for families who were previously limited to 24 or 36 hours per fortnight.
This change aims to ensure that children can access at least three days of early learning every week, supporting both their development and your family’s flexibility.
Important information to know:
The government is investing $426.7 million over five years to make early learning more accessible for Australian families.
Removal of the activity test
Currently, the CCS “Activity Test” links your subsidy to how much you work, study or volunteer. From January 2026, this requirement will be removed making it easier for parents on parental leave, between jobs, or working casually to continue accessing subsidised care.
Depending on your family income, the 3-Day Guarantee and Activity Test removal could lead to substantial savings.
Here are a few examples:
*Actual savings vary depending on your centre’s daily rate and the number of days your child attends.
If you’re new to the subsidy, you can apply through myGov by linking your account to Services Australia (Centrelink). You’ll be guided through a short CCS assessment. Once approved, the subsidy is paid directly to your childcare provider, and you’ll only pay the remaining balance via your regular direct-debit payment.
If you’re already receiving CCS, you don’t need to reapply, just make sure your family income estimate in myGov is accurate and up to date.
What is the 3-Day Guarantee?
The 3-Day Guarantee is an initiative introduced by the Australian Government to make childcare more affordable and flexible for families. Eligible families can access a minimum of three days of subsidised care per child each fortnight, even if their activity hours would usually entitle them to less.
This helps parents maintain access to quality early learning while managing changing work or study commitments.
